One of Singapore’s leading food gurus, Violet Oon is known as
much for her cooking as for her opinions on food. She’s considered
a leading authority on Asian cuisine and her own speciality is the Nonya
cuisine of Singapore. Her reputation as a chef and food specialist spans
the international arena and she often represents Singapore as a food
Ambassador abroad. Oon has published three cookbooks of her own and
they are Peranakan Cooking; Violet Oon Cooks; A Singapore Family Cookbook.
On the international arena, she has co-authored the Curry Cookbook in
German published by Teubner Publications and most recently she was commissioned
to write and recipe test the recipes for Naturally Peninsula, the cookbook
of the Peninsula Hotel group of Hong Kong.
She has been commissioned to develop and write cookbooks for Tiger
Beer as well as for International Enterprise Singapore (IE Singapore)
and her latest cookbook is Tasty Singapore Timeless Recipes for IE Singapore.
She started her career as a music critic in 1971 for a Singapore newspaper
called the New Nation and in 1987, she launched her own food magazine
called THE FOOD PAPER. In keeping up with the times, The Food Paper
has morphed into an e-zine which is now launching as VioletOon.com.
Oon is a leading F&B consultant and food researcher and has archived
the National Heritage Board of Singapore’s exhibition called Singapore
Food Prints (2005). Oon has cheffed extensively, with her most exciting
projects encompassing a dinner at the James Beard House and leading
the Singapore culinary team to the Worlds of Flavors events at the Culinary
Institute of America’s Napa campus in 2004. Oon has also spoken
at the IACP annual conference in Baltimore in 2004 and in 2006, was
the food consultant for the IMF World Bank conference in Singapore.
She has shared her culinary experiences and cooking skills with TV
audiences in programmes filmed and aired by the BBC, CNN, and The Food
Network and also by Singapore’s Channel 5.
Born in 1949, Violet is a Singapore Nonya, belonging to a rich culture
which is known as Peranakan. This culture is also known as Baba and
Straits Chinese. This culture is a blend of the native Malay of Singapore
and the Chinese immigrants who came down south to the Nanyang (the South
Seas) to make their fortunes in the 19th century. Nonya cuisine is the
first and most innovative fusion cuisine of Singapore, representing
a marriage of the East and East.
